Thomas Andrus

Thomas E. Andrus 92 of Monterey, MA. died Friday September 20, 2019 peacefully at home. He was born in Great Barrington, on July 24, 1927 to Franklin and Mabel Stalker Andrus. In his youth, Tom delivered the Berkshire Courier, was a farm hand and any other work so he could bring home money to help his parents. Tom’s hard work ethic continued throughout his life. Tom graduated from Searles High School. He was an Air Raid Spotter and member of the Massachusetts State Guard from 1942-1945.  He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Panama near the end of WWII. He was co-owner of A&C Auto Body from 1959-1975 and then worked at Plaza Ford. In 1979, he joined his son, Tommy in his auto body shop, Precision Autocraft in Monterey and through its relocation to Sheffield. Tom was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Mill River and Our Lady of the Valley Church, Sheffield. He also sang in the choir in both churches. From 1965-2005, Tom was a Volunteer Fireman for the Town of Monterey and during that time saw the construction of the new firehouse. He was a mentor for the area youth, interested in the auto body field. Thursday nights were devoted to the Shrine of Devine Mercy as an Accolade for over 15 years. In his free time, Tom was an avid bowler. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always helping his children through various construction projects. Tom leaves his wife of 61 years, the former Patricia A. Hanley, whom he married on May 3, 1958 in Immaculate Conception Church. Tom leaves a Daughter, Susan Marie Lukas, and her husband Kenneth, of Pleasant Valley, Missouri, his daughter in law, Kathy Andrus, of Mill River, and his grandchildren Melissa and Max his wife Jenny. Son Daniel Sr. and his wife Julie, of Sandisfield, and his grandchildren Daniel II  Nicole and Ukiah. Son Richard F. and his wife Denise of Monterey and his grandchildren Lauren and Hunter. Son Jon C. and his wife Heather of Otis, and his grandchildren Morgan, Rene, Ashley, Alison and Felicity. Tom also leaves 6 great grandchildren (with another due in November) many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Tom was predeceased by his son Thomas M., and one sister Lois Curtiss.

Funeral services for Thomas E. Andrus who died September 20, will be held on Saturday September 28, at Our Lady of the Valley Church 10:00 AM with the Reverend Peter Naranjo, officiating. Burial will follow in Corashire Cemetery, Monterey. Family will receive friends on Friday September 27, from 4-6 PM at the Birches-Roy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, family requests that expressions of sympathy in Tom’s memory may be made to either Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to Our Lady of the Valley Building Fund both in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA. 01230. In 1957/58 Tom took an old wrecked 1951 Ford Convertible that I owned and ,working from a load of pencil sketches I made,turned it into one of the finest custom cars in New England..To me, he was an artist with an acetylene torch. His final, self designed, paint coating, he called “Grapseskin Gold”.It was truly incredible! For years afterward every time our paths, crossed he remembered “That car” and those good times so many years ago. I’ll remember him as a kind, softspoken, even tempered person even when he was dealing with an impulsive, know-it-all teenager. Thank you Tom, you were the best!
