Ronald “Ron” Hastings Race 91, of Housatonic, MA, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Ron was born in Great Barrington on October 21, 1926, son of Clarence and Ethel Nicholas Race. He attended local schools and was a 1944 graduate of the former Searles High School. Ron proudly served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army. He worked at the former Monument Mills, and for George Wright.  He then worked for the town of Great Barrington as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1980 after 24 years. He was the owner of the R.H. Race Inc. Pallet and Skid Company and also made outdoor furniture from 1980-1987 when he retired due to injury.  Ron served as Captain of the Housatonic Hose Company, until his retirement in 1987 due to his injury.  He was a communicant of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church of the Corpus Christi Parrish and he also taught CCD there. He was also a member of the Adams Forest Warden’s Association. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his beloved Red Sox. During his retirement years he always enjoyed hanging out with his friends every morning at the Post Office or during the warmer weather sitting on the bench in front of Aberdale’s. He was a gentle caring man whose family always came first.  Ron leaves his wife the former Joan Storti (the girl up on the hill) whom he married September 8, 1951 in Corpus Christi Church, two sons Tony of Great Barrington and Ronnie of Cheshire, and a daughter Jennifer of Housatonic, three grandchildren Christina Rusnack, of South Carolina, Nicholas Race of North Carolina and Megan Race of Pittsfield and one great grandson Isaiah Rusnack. Ron was predeceased by his brother Vernon in 1980.

Funeral services for Ronald “Ron” Hastings Race, who died April 11, will be held on Monday April 16, 2018 at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church of the Corpus Christi Parrish at 10:00 AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial, with the Reverend William S. Murphy, pastor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery.  Family will receive friends at calling hours on Sunday April 15, from 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Ron’s memory may be made to Housatonic Hose Company or Hospice Care in the Berkshires both in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA. 01230.
