Obituary of Rebecca S. Marcus

Rebecca Marcus 001

Rebecca Seiff Marcus, a long time Becket resident, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, surrounded by her family. Rebecca was born on August 10, 1930 and raised in the Bronx, New York. After graduating from Calhoun High School in New York City in 1948, she enrolled at Mount Sinai Nursing School, earning an R.N. in 1952. On September 7th of the same year Rebecca married Stanley Marcus. She worked full time as a nurse until she had their daughter, Lynne, and, several years later, their son, Joel. Rebecca stayed at home with the children until the mid 1960’s, when she returned to school part-time to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She earned her degree in 1973, and became one of the first nurses to specialize in coronary care nursing, pioneering a specialty that is now commonplace.

Wishing to further her education, she earned a Masters Degree from Columbia University in 1977. This allowed her to change the focus of her career to teaching nursing.  When Rebecca and Stanley moved to Odessa, Texas, she taught at Odessa College until the early 1990’s.  After Stanley retired in 1992, they resettled in the Berkshires, where Rebecca taught nursing at Berkshire Community College, often supervising nursing students at Berkshire Medical Center. She was a beloved instructor, and is still remembered by many of her students.

After she retired from her long career in nursing, she was able to devote more time to her many hobbies. She was very active in the Jewish Community, often organizing Friday night services in local retirement homes. She loved to entertain and host parties, and was well known in her community as a feisty woman who spoke her mind. She was an enthusiastic, but ruthless tennis player, and she often played a cunning game of Rummy 500 with Stanley. She also spent many long hours in the art studio working alongside Stanley, making beautiful stained glass pieces. She was a dear friend to many and her beauty, warmth and sly sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Rebecca is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Jeff Crespy, her son and daughter-in-law Joel and Carol Marcus, her grandson Matthew Crespy and his wife, Heather, her grandson Jonathan Crespy and his fianceé Lindsay Stiller, and her beloved dog Tammie. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Rebecca and Stanley’s devoted and loving caregivers, April Schulz, Renee Vincent, Janet Thornton, Derek Friend, and Joe Machere.
