Obituary of Mieczyslaw (Matthew) S. Byrka

Mieczyslaw (Matthew) S. Byrka, 97 of Housatonic died Saturday November 20, 2021 at his son’s home surrounded by his loving family. Matt was born in Poland on March 30, 1924 son of Mieczyslaw Byrka. After graduating High School Matt worked for Mead Paper in internal and external main facility services. He was a communicant and Senior Choir member of the former All Saint’s Church in Housatonic, he was a shoemaker by trade and an avid woodworker who’s craftsmanship can be found in the homes of many. Matt’s wife Bionislawa (Bessie) (Pazdan) Byrka predeceased him on December 24, 2018. Matt is survived by son Joseph Byrka his wife Deborah, grandson Christopher Byrka, granddaughter, Jennifer Byrka all of South Windsor CT and grandson Michael Byrka and his wife Victoria and great grandson Rayland Byrka of Louisville KY, son John Byrka and wife Nancy, granddaughter, Caitryn Byrka, granddaughter, Kerry Macchi and husband Paul and great grandson Tyler Jude Macchi and Nolan Matthew Macchi all of South Windsor CT, granddaughter Meghan Larocca and husband Charles and great granddaughter Gianna Rose Larocca all of South Windsor CT. Grandson, Ryan Kydd and his wife Tanja, great grandsons Pierce Carpenter and Brennen Kydd and great granddaughter, Taryn Kydd all of Mount Pleasant SC. In addition to his wife Bessie, Matt was also predeceased by his son Edward Byrka.

Funeral services for Mieczyslaw (Matthew) S. Byrka will be held on Monday November 29 at 10:00 AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi Church Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish with Reverend William P. Murphy Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Bridget’s Cemetery in Housatonic. Family will receive friends on Monday November 29 from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington MA 01230. Due to COVID19 concerns the family requests masks be worn for safety at the funeral home and church. Condolences may be made through

  1. Matthew was such a kind and wonderful man! All my children learnt to ride their bikes in his driveway! They spent many summer evenings sitting with them outside and stopping over to get some chocolate from Bessie. My children hold both Bessie and Matthew close to their hearts always full of giggles and kisses when they would run to greet them. Sending lots of love during this sad time.
