Maria M. Szwyd, 91, of Housatonic, MA, passed away on February 14, 2023, after a brief illness at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA. Maria was born on October 1, 1931, in Soldacka Sloboda, Poland, to Jozef Michno and Paulina Lysy Michno. During World War II, Maria, her parents, and her two brothers, Frank and John, were forced to work in a German Labor camp as farmers. The entire family arrived in the US in November 1949 in search of a better and free life. Maria became a proud US Citizen in 1955.

The family settled in Housatonic, where Maria worked at Monument Mills for a short time and then as a seamstress for David Hats. She was also a cook for several prominent Stockbridge families. Maria was a communicant of the former All Saints Church in Housatonic, as her Catholic faith was a crucial part of her life. Maria was a devoted mother and wife and provided for her family by being an accomplished cook and baker.

Maria is survived by her three sons, John Szwyd (Deborah) of Murphy, NC, Robert Szwyd (Nancy) of Rochester, NH, and Edward Szwyd (Joanna) Szwyd of Housatonic. She is also survived by her grandsons, Matthew (Katie) Szwyd, Alex Szwyd, and Jamey Szwyd, and three great- granddaughters, Aema, Scout, and Lilly. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stanley, and her brothers, John Michno and Frank Michno.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Visitation will be on Saturday morning, February 18, from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME at 33 South St, Great Barrington. The church will hold a rosary prayer before the funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning February 18 at 10:00 AM at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 1085 Main St, Housatonic, MA. Father William Murphy and Father Michael Pierz will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Housatonic. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Maria’s memory may be made to the Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish Building Fund, care of Birches Roy funeral home. Condolences may be made through
