Obituary of Genis Melendez-Delaney

Genis Melendez-Delaney died on Sept. 10, 2021, in Albany Medical Center.  She died peacefully, surrounded by her husband, friends, and family.  Genis was a lifelong educator.  She began by teaching elementary school, became the principal of PS 151 in Manhattan, and taught on the faculties of SUNY Albany and Hostos Community College.  She served as the president of the NYS Association for Bilingual Education.  She became the director of the Principals’ Institute at Bank Street College and retired from that to a home with her husband in Egremont, MA, where she promptly was elected to the Southern Berkshire Regional School District Committee. She also worked extensively as a translator for Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires.  A renowned cook and an accomplished gardener, Genis brought warmth, caring, a sense of mischief, and a respect for competence wherever she went.  She is survived by her husband, Chet, family, virtual children, and a host of friends, all of whom miss her deeply.
