 Donald “Donny” W. Lawrence Jr., 52, of Great Barrington died Sunday June 4, 2017 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington surrounded by his loving family. Donny was born in Pittsfield on July 3, 1964 son of the late Donald W. Sr. and Harriet (Wheeler) Lawrence. He was a graduate of Monument Mountain Regional High School class of 1984. Donny worked for many years as a mill wright at Allyndale Limestone in East Canaan CT, along with being a very experienced truck driver as well throughout the years. He was also very involved in his community as a proud and dedicated fireman. In the mid 1980’s Donny joined the Housatonic Fire Department and the Great Barrington Fire Department and later joined the Alford Fire Department and became Captain in the ranks for at least ten years. Donny was a mentor for junior firefighters, he loved sharing his knowledge as his heart and soul was within the Fire Department. Donny was devoted to his being one of the best drivers and pump operators he could be. He was by far one of the very best, as most brother firemen well know.  He was also a member of S.B.V.A.S. and a member of the National Guard for six years. Donny loved his sons and watching them play sports. He was a referee for Southern Berkshire Youth Football and Housatonic Boys Basketball League, an umpire and coach for Great Barrington Little League an avid supporter and fan of Berkshire Rugby. Donny was an avid fan of the N.Y. Jets and Boston Red Sox.  Donny loved spending time with his family. He was looking forward to day trips with Linda, which always included a trip to Maine. Donny is survived by his loving mother Harriet (Wheeler) Lawrence, his best friend and wife Linda (Welch) Lawrence whom he married on June 17, 1989 of Great Barrington, two sons, Donald “Will” Lawrence III and wife Amanda of Becket and Andrew Lawrence of Great Barrington, one brother, Eddie Lawrence of Great Barrington, three sisters, Debbie Hiser and husband Phil of Lee, Laurie Jones and Joe McDonald of Great Barrington and Sharon Smith and husband Dave “Smitty” of Stockbridge, two granddaughters, Lily and Azalea, six nieces and nephews, Amy, Lainey, Jessi, Philip, Kali and Kamdin, one great niece, Aleigha and many aunts, uncles and cousins and his dog, Boomer. Donny is also survived by his loving in-laws George and Jill Welch of Sheffield and brother in-law Jim Welch of Stockbridge, all of whom Donny loved dearly.

 A Celebration of Life for Donald “Donny” W. Lawrence Jr. will be held on Friday June 9, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington MA 01230. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Donny’s memory may be made to the Alford Fire Department in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be made through birchesroyfuneralservices.com.

  2. If I started to write all I feel, the memories, I truly would write a book.
    You have left behind a legacy to be so very proud of. The out pouring of love from people ( just on fb ) shows the world what a great man you had become. It brings much sadness to my heart to have to say goodbye to you. To understand the heartache everyone feels. With tears in my eyes , I send my deepest, heartfelt sympathy to Linda, your boys.. Mom, sisters, brother and all your family .
    Our last conversation was after that large lightning burst, so now I will think of you through every storm, and I will smile , cherishing that last chuckle of love with you!

  3. Linda and family My heart goes out to you. I would have loved to come to the wake-but I will be in Boston with my special olympic team. I will be there in spirit.

  4. My sincere condolences to all of Donny’s family. He was a great guy and an extremely valuable asset to the South County community. It was great to see him once in a while on my trips back home, always a good conversation. He will be missed. Rest in peace Donny.

  5. Donny was a huge part of my youth during the summers at Woodland Hills Campground. I can’t find words other than those to describe the contributions Donny leaves behind him. Godspeed

  8. Don was a wonderful person from when I first knew him in elementary school until the last time I saw him about a month ago. Always ready to help others and showed kindness. Huge loss to his family and friends at such a young age. RIP Don!

  12. I remember Donny as a kind and helpful man with a great sense of humor. Everyone at ‘the Commons’ appreciated him, especially the children. My love to Linda, Harriet, and ‘the boys’,as well as the rest of his family and friends.
