Obituary of Chester Z. Bonak

Chester Zigmond Bonak, 92, of 52 Glendale Road in Stockbridge MA died Tuesday October 17, 2018 at Fairview Commons Nursing Home in Great Barrington. He was born at home on March 27, 1926. He had lived all his life in that same home. He was the son of Polish immigrants; Stanislaw and Anna Olender Banach. He attended grade school at the Glendale School and the Stockbridge Plain School. He was a member of the class of 1943 at Williams High School in Stockbridge. He was a licensed electrician employed at General Electric in Pittsfield, MA for 35 years until his retirement in 1986. While there he was a group leader. He was also employed as the Wire Inspector for the Town of Stockbridge for 28 years until he retired in1998. As a young boy and through his teen years he worked with his family at their dairy farm on Route 183 in Stockbridge. It was one of the first local dairy farms to deliver milk and dairy products in the Housatonic area. When pasteurization went into effect his parents closed the farm and sold the herd. He belonged to the GE Quarter Century Club, Pensioners Association and the Massachusetts Wire Inspector’s Association. Chet was an avid golfer and belonged to the South Side Golf League in Pittsfield for many years. He also loved vegetable gardening and working around his home and yard. He looked forward to traveling to Florida for winter vacations each year. He had a passion for crossword puzzles. He attended All Saint Church all his life. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1945 through 1947. He was stationed in the United States and served as a Medic. He leaves his wife Susan Mayo whom he married in 1962, a daughter Susan M. Rabbitt and her husband Christopher from Brimfield MA and a son Michael S. Bonak of Stockbridge and son Christopher Bonak of Hadley. He also leaves three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Raymond, Alexander, Stanley, Anthony, Benjamin and John and two sisters, Anna Banach and Alexandra Badurski.

Funeral Services for Chester Zigmond Bonak will be held on Friday October 19, 2018 at 10:00 AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi Church Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish with Reverend William P. Murphy Pastor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Saint Bridget’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday October 18 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington MA 01230. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Chet’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be made through
