It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother, Barbara Mary (Fallon) Bersaw at the age of 92. She died Thursday September 2, 2001 at home surrounded by her loving family. For the past 14 years she shared her home with her daughter Carolyn. Her family is grateful for the loving care Carolyn gave her. Together they made a great team.

Barbara was born January 23, 1929 in North Adams, daughter of the late Katherine (Fleming) and Edward Fallon. She attended elementary and high school at St. Joseph’s, graduating in 1946. In 1950 she received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Massachusetts State Teacher College in North Adams, then began teaching at Houghton School.

On April 28, 1951 she married Robert J. Bersaw of Williamstown. She taught in local schools and in Samford, VT. being joined there by her husband.

For many years she remained home to raise their six children and resumed her career in 1967 as a Remedial Reading teacher. She and Bob taught at Roe Jan Central School in Hillsdale, NY. They were involved in many scouting and parish activities. She was a den mother and she and Bob started a youth group in St. Bridget’s. In 1969 the family moved to Castle Street in Great Barrington. Barbara and Bob were blessed with six children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Barbara is survived by her sons Douglas A. Bersaw and his wife Kathy of Richmond N.H., Daniel R. Bersaw and his wife Carol of Great Barrington, and daughters Dr. Eileen L. O’Leary and her husband Michael of Blarney Ireland, Carolyn V. Bersaw who lived with her, Marian T. Hassett and husband  Tim of Housatonic and Patricia A. Noonan and husband Patrick of Brandon VT, fourteen  grandchildren and fourteen (with two more expected ) great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Helen Sheehy, of Woods Hole, and nieces Suzi Mahony Gallen and Karen Mahony Fox and their families, all in Australia.

Barbara’s beloved husband died in December 2001. Barbara was also predeceased by her sister Claire Mahony of Australia, Claire’s husband Terry and her daughter-in-law Mary Conway Bersaw.

In April 2001 Barbara and Bob celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in joyous occasion in Eastover Resort in Lenox. It was, she would often say, “the party to end all parties”

Barbara was a devout Catholic, and was well known at the Marian Father’s in Stockbridge. She was also a die-hard Red Sox fan, as many who knew her could tell you.  She was a very kind, caring, and considerate woman utterly devoted to her family. She loved children, and they loved her back. She was precious to all who knew her, she was a great presence and an inspiration to many. Although she will be sorely missed, she has left us with many wonderful memories, including those of many travels, family vacations family events, and beautiful everyday moments.

  1. Dear Bersaw Family,

Qe ere sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. I will miss seeing her around town. We remember her and the rest of your family as being the greatest neighbors ever! We remember the winter of 1975 when Susan was pregnant with our son Noah, and a Thanksgiving storm hit so that our parents couldn’t join us for the holiday. Your family invited us to share their table, and I remember playing Irish music with Eileen’s husband.. What a joy! May she be of blessed memory.
